Outdoor men like me have realised that sunshine is very different these days, compared to the days when we were young. The climate has changed, temperatures have escalated over the years due to global warming and we all feel the effects of the intensified rays of the scorching sun.
I have developed wrinkles and sun spots on my face – yes, of course I have accepted the fact that they are part and parcel of the aging process – but I am certain they are aggravated by skin damage caused by ultraviolet rays. These are the very areas I can never fully or effectively shield from the sun whenever I am outdoors, especially when engaging in activities that do not allow wearing a cap or a visor.
Inevitably, men have realised that they too need sunblock these days, to protect themselves from the harmful effects of the sun.
The sunscreen I am currently using is L’Oréal UV Perfect Ultimate Protection Fluid with Mexoryl XL SPF50/PA+++. Mexoryl XL is actually drometrizole trisiloxane, which is a lipophilic benzotriazole derivative that is exclusively used in L’Oréal-owned brands, especially sunscreens, to absorb ultraviolet radiation. It is a broad spectrum UV absorber with two absorption peaks, one at 303 nm (UVB) and the other at 344 nm (UVA).
What I like about this product is that it is not sticky, greasy or clammy to the touch. The liquid is thin and spreads easily over facial skin, so just three little drops (on forehead and each cheek) is enough to spread and cover the whole area of the face. The creamy liquid is rapidly absorbed and it smells nice too. Unlike some of the other sunscreens I’ve tried, it does not make your face look ghastly white or give you the “gothic” appearance. Another plus factor for me is that it comes in a small, sleek and flat tube, about the size of a mobile phone, so I can carry it in my pocket wherever I go, without the “bulge” that most other sunscreen bottles would cause.
However, what I do not really like about this product is that it makes your face look a little shiny.
Still, to me there are more pros than cons and so I plan to stick to this product unless a better one comes along.
Ed: And here’s what the women say about L’oreal UV Perfect sunscreen.
